GJC President Janet Benshoof speaks on "A rights- based approach to violence against women."

On June 20, 2011, the Foreign Press Association in London (FPA) hosted an International Symposium on 'Women as Agents of Change: Why women are fundamental to political, economic and social transformation' in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat to mark the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. The event reflected Commonwealth's theme for 2011 and explored the role of women in conflict and peace and the need for their inclusion in political and economic life.
Influential academics, activists, politicians and business leaders from around the world were invited to take part in the discussion sessions and highlighted the substantive contribution of women and the media in advancing key human rights and development goals.
The keynote remarks were given by Nobel Laureate economist Professor Amartya Sen which "outlined the concept of shared human identities and a civil approach to managing conflict, social disaffection and prejudice."
Global Justice Center President Janet Benshoof spoke in the discussion on violence and peace building advocating the "use of international law to leverage women into power," and stressed the importance of the Commonwealth Body."
