GJC Writes Letter to Baroness Ashton Requesting a Security Council Resolution Declaring the Burmese Constitution Invalid Under International Law
April 11, 2011
On April 8th, 2011 the Global Justice Center wrote a letter to Baroness Catherine Margaret Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Council of the European Union, regarding the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union Renewal of the Council Common Position on Burma.
In the letter the Global Justice Center outlined the reasons that the 2008 Burmese Constitution is contrary to international law and the Charter of the United Nations and constitutes a threat to the international legal order. The Global Justice Center concluded that in order to address this threat the Security Council should seek a resolution declaring the Burmese Constitution invalid under international law and the UN Charter.
Attached to the letter was a prelimary analysis by the Global Justice Center indicating that at least 54 out of the 85 high ranking members of the "new" Burmese government are found on the list of persons subject to travel bans and asset freezes under the Council Common Position on Burma.
