The NOW Foundation uses GJC legal arguments to call for a clean CEDAW

August 31, 2009

The NOW Foundation is using the Global Justice Center's legal arguments to call for the U.S. ratification of CEDAW without reservations, understandings and declarations (RUDs). In August 2009, human rights lawyer Martha Davis submitted a legal memo to the NOW Foundation outlining the global effects that the RUDs would have on the treaty. In this memo Davis cites the Global Justice Center's white paper "New Visions for International Law and U.S. Foreign Policy." In a position statement released by the NOW Foundation in response to Davis's memo, the NOW Foundation notes the Global Justice Center's singular voice in the fight to ratify a clean CEDAW. The statement quotes GJC President Janet Benshoof "that if passed with the qualifiers currently in place, CEDAW will threaten the advancement of equality rights globally." The statement then calls on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to ratify CEDAW without qualifiers. Read the article on NOW's website
