FPA & Commonwealth Secretariat International Symposium on "Women as Agents of Change" in London

The Foreign Press Association of London (FPA) is hosting an International Symposium on 'Women as Agents of Change: Why women are fundamental to political, economic and social transformation'on Monday, June 20, 2011.The event, held in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat, reflects the Commonwealth theme for 2011, and marks the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day this year. The keynote speaker will be the Nobel Laureate economist Professor Amartya Sen whose work on Civil Paths to Peace forms the basis of the Commonwealth's exploration into the root causes of violence and conflict.

The event will explore the role of women in conflict and peace and the need for their inclusion in political and economic life. The part the media plays in shaping attitudes towards women will also be examined. The aim will be to highlight the substantive contribution of women and the media in advancing key human rights and development goals.

Influential academics, activists, politicians and business leaders from around the world have been invited to take part in the discussion sessions. These will include the role of the media in reporting women; political and economic participation and inclusion; poverty, and economic inequality; and violence and peace-building.

GJC President Janet Benshoof will speak on "A rights-based approach to violence against women."
