How the Failure to End Impunity in Failed and Criminal Regime States Threatens Global Peace and Security

Panelists discussed the serious consequences to both global security and the legitimacy of international law arising from States' individual and collective failure to comply with this legal imperative. Using Burma as an example, panelists attempted to demonstrate how ongoing impunity for criminal dictators like Senior General Than Shwe prohibits victims from ever accessing their rights to justice, encourages an escalation in grave crimes and promotes criminal dictatorships.

Andrea Friedman will be speaking at the ILSA 2009 Spring Conference

Washington DC, March 26-27, 2009

The Spring Conference is held in conjunction with the International Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. Unlike the Fall Conference which is held at a different university each year, the Spring Conference is always organized by the ILSA Student Officers and held in Washington D.C. The Spring Conference consists of academic panel discussions about international law issues as well as sessions designed to assist Jessup teams who did not advance in the Competition. The Spring Congress is also held at this conference. At Spring Congress, ILSA members convene to discuss the year's activities and plans for the organization. The Spring Conference is always well-attended, and is a wonderful networking opportunity for students. The 2009 ILSA Spring Conference will be held March 26-27 at the Fairmont Hotel in Washington, D.C. The Conference is entitled "50 Years of the Jessup: Reflections on the Past, Visions of the Future".


Shirin Ebadi In conversation with Janet Benshoof, President, Global Justice Center

Janet Benshoof will be talking with Iranian lawyer, writer, and teacher, Shirin Ebadi. Ebadi received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2003 for her efforts to promote democracy and human rights, especially those of women and children in Iran. She was the first Muslim woman and the first Iranian to receive the award. She has become internationally known for her attempts to convince the world that Iran can be both a moderate democracy - a people whose leaders are fairly elected and responsible to the citizens - and a nation guided by Islamic values.


53rd Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women. It is the principal global policy-making body. Every year, representatives of Member States gather at United Nations Headquarters in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide. The Commission was established by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) of 21 June 1946 with the aim to prepare recommendations and reports to the Council on promoting women's rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields. The Commission also makes recommendations to the Council on urgent problems requiring immediate attention in the field of women's rights. The GJC will be participating on two panels on International Law and Women's Empowement and on Burma.
